We would have all heard about fertilizers and would know what their application is. Many of us would have probably used a fertilizer in our garden before. So why are fertilizers so essential in farming or plant growth? Before we discuss their importance or how beneficial they are, let's first learn what fertilizers are. They are substances that are made up of chemical compounds that are known to improve the growth of plants. Some soil may be lacking a certain nutrient thus using fertilizers is a way to add those missing nutrients to the soil for healthy growth of the plant. They also contain chemicals that can tolerate harsh weathers, develop a strong immune system to resist attacks by insects and pests.

With the growing demands of the expanding population of the world, farmers have to ensure that they can produce quality crops to stay competitive in their business. However, managing big farms is totally different from managing a small garden. There are many factors that affect the quality of the crops that farmers produce. Farmer would likely farm crops at the same place over and over again, it would drain the nutrients of the soil thus resulting in crops of bad quality. Using fertilizers can be a solution for the farmer to restore the nutrients in the soil. This way, the farmer would not have to keep relocating to continue farming and also producing quality crops.

Another advantage that crops can offer farmers is that they increase the output of their produce by using fertilizers. With fertilizers applied to the soil, it would allow for more crops to grow thus increasing output. If you were to compare it to an area where no fertilizers have been used, that area would have a lower output due to the lack of nutrients and inability to fight pests.

In Gardens

If you are interested in maintaining a colourful and healthy garden in your backyard, fertilizers would be of great help. They can help improve the health of plants by providing them with essential nutrients to grow. With these nutrients, the plants would be more 'green' thus giving your garden a more vibrant colour. Imagine if the plants in your garden did not receive the essential nutrients, they would probably turn brown and die after sometime, giving your garden an unsightly look. Also, potted plants tend to lose their nutrients quickly thus constantly applying fertilizers would give your plants a healthy life. However, remember not to apply too many fertilizers as it would harm the health of your plants. Use specific fertilizers which are meant for the plants that you are gardening as it would ensure that you get optimum results.

Fertilizers, if used properly can be of great help to plants and provide farmers and gardeners with the desired results. However, if fertilizers that are not meant for a specific crop are used on that crop, it could harm it; therefore one should be careful when using fertilizers.
